About the Executive Leadership Institute

Instructional Methodology
The Executive Leadership Institute program focuses on best practices in the field of human services management and leadership. Content is delivered over 100 hours in two concentrated sessions of 4˝ days each over two years. The course of study includes pre-institute reading, formal presentations, interactive sessions, a practicum, and individual mentoring.

A project, completed between the first and second years, ends with an oral presentation before the assembly of participants and faculty. Faculty of the university’s School of Social Work and Ross Business School serve as mentors for the projects.

Finally, your organization will benefit from the natural networking that takes place among ELI participants as well as the establishment of professional relationships between participants and the nationally renowned ELI presenters and University of Michigan faculty who serve as mentors.

Continuing Education Credits
The University of Michigan awards CEU credits for ELI sessions (3.2 credits per year of participation) for a small fee paid to the university. Participants completing both sessions also receive a certificate in nonprofit management.

Financial Investment
Your organization’s investment for the 2008 session is only $3,300* (comparable programs typically cost $1,000-$1,500 more) for members of the Alliance for Children and Families. The nonmember fee is $4,300. This fee includes program costs, all materials, and room and board. Transportation is not included. All applications must be submitted before April 1, 2008. A deposit of $1,000 must accompany the application.

* The 2008 fee for participants returning from the 2007 session is only $3,000.

Cancellation Policy
All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing and are subject to a $500 processing fee. Cancellations received after March 28, 2008, will not be refunded. Written cancellation notice should be directed via email to , director of consultation and leadership development, Alliance for Children and Families or faxed to 414-359-1074.

Application Process
Enrollment is limited to 30 executives and senior-level managers with policy and program responsibility. Preference is given to applicants from member organizations of the Alliance for Children and Families.

Prospective participants should complete the online application. A 250-word essay should accompany the application, as directed on the application page, on the topic of what you believe it takes to prepare nonprofit leaders today to lead for a lifetime.

Location
ELI participants are housed at the Bell Tower Hotel, recipient of Ann Arbor’s coveted Award for Outstanding Historic Preservation, combining old world elegance with gracious service. The Bell Tower is conveniently located within the University of Michigan campus and downtown Ann Arbor.

The hotel room is included in your ELI registration fee.

Participants planning to fly to Ann Arbor should make their arrangements via Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The trip from the airport to the hotel is approximately 30 minutes; taxicabs and rental cars are readily available at the airport.
