Panelists: Jimmie R. Alford, founder and chair, The Alford Group; and members of the RDS Advisory Committee. Toolbox for Beginners An integral part of a successful fund development plan is creating your own fund development toolbox for the future. During this session, participants will learn what the Toolbox is and what should be included in their Toolbox and ongoing fund development plan. Presenters: Len Iaquinta,principal, Len Iaquinta’s Excellence in Communications, Inc.; and Barbara Ritchie, director, Griffith Centers for Children Foundation. 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. Networking Lunch with Roundtable Discussions 1:15 – 2:45 p.m. WORKSHOPS Grant Writing for Success This workshop will introduce the key components of successful grant proposals and provide an overview of the steps required to develop, budget, and manage them. Topics covered will include researching potential funders, writing concept papers, drafting the formal proposal, constructing realistic budgets, and transitioning funded proposals to an outcomes monitoring document for report backs to funders. Presenter: Patrice Heinz, director of resource development, Alliance for Children and Families. Handout 1 Handout 2 Marketing for the Perplexed How do you disseminate your message on a shoestring budget? What “hidden” audiences have you been missing? How do branding, advertising, and public relations differ? When is a flyer not just a flyer? How can you maximize the efforts of an overworked staff? These and other questions will be answered at this lively and interactive workshop. Participants will examine the ins and outs of marketing and how effective marketing can increase your fund development efforts. Presenter: Lisa Brooks, director of communications and donor relations, Jewish Family Service. 2:45 – 3:00 p.m. Break 3:00 – 4:30 p.m WORKSHOPS Guerilla Tactics for Fund Development Are you looking for the latest trends in marketing your agency to potential donors? Want to find out how those creative sidewalk displays, billboards, and public service announcements are done? If so, please join us for this interactive workshop where we will share best practices and the latest trends for marketing nonprofit human service agencies to potential donors. Find out which campaigns are working and may be right for your organization. Presenters: Heather Aldrich, executive director, Serve Marketing; Patricia Gray, community relations manager, Family Services of King County; and Dan Magnuson, executive director, The Counseling Center of Milwaukee. Board Ambassadors: Engaging the Board Without Trespassing or Fear This workshop will focus on the pivotal role of board members in the development process, particularly in communicating the importance of the mission and impact of the organization. Few board members feel comfortable asking for donations; in fact, most are fearful of trespassing upon their personal and business relationships in the name of development. In this workshop we will review strategies and tactics that will enable volunteers to begin conversations on mission and vision within their personal networks. Presenters: Robert Jones, president & CEO, Children’s Aid and Family Services, Inc., and Betsy Vander Velde, president & CEO, The Family Conservancy.
