The history of the Severson National Information Center |
In 1986, John G. Severson contributed a major gift to Family Service America (currently the Alliance for Children and Families) for the new National Information Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The special gift was in honor of his wife's extraordinary commitment to the family service movement and to her own family. Jan Severson's volunteer commitment has spanned over 40 years and has encompassed distinguished leadership in family service posts at local, regional, and national levels. Mrs. Severson began her lifework with FSA in 1960 in Deerfield, Illinois, where she served for twelve years on the board of Family Service of South Lake County and two years as board president. During this period, she was first elected to the National Board of Directors of FSA. Mrs. Severson's national service during the past has included several terms as a member of the FSA Executive Committee, chair of the National Public Relations Committee, chair of the Committee on Government Affairs and Public Policy, co-chair of the FSA Biennial International Conference in Atlanta, and a delegate to the White House Conference on Families. The Severson National Information Center functions as a national clearinghouse of information on services to the family and administration and management of nonprofit agencies. it is designed to meet the needs of the media, business, government, and social service organizations concerned with family issues. The staff provide in-depth reference and library loan services to family service professionals and other individuals from the above-mentioned sectors.
