Double bottom line: lessons on social
enterprise from Seedco's nonprofit venture network 2001-2004
Social purpose business activities as part of many nonprofit operations have
been around for a long time. But in the early 1990s, a new kind of movement
and mystique around the idea emerged as younger venture capitalists entered
the philanthropic community. Seedco—with its business acumen, its track
record of providing technical and financial assistance to nonprofits and
small businesses, started two ventures of its own.

development services (BDS) practitioners with a business planning tool for
their market-led social enterprises. Information, case studies, examples,
and planning methodology in this manual are steeped in Save the Children’s
