National Television Programs 'Give Big' to Alliance Member Organizations

In mid-April, Idaho Youth Ranch based in Boise, Idaho, received an early-morning visit from Al Roker of NBC's "Today Show."

The visit kicked off Roker's weeklong "Lend a Hand" tour. During the segment, the "Today Show" aired video from the ranch and shared the organization's story as well as its treatment and therapy strategies. The video included firsthand accounts from a ranch graduate and two current residents.

Then came the big surprise, when the loading door of two semi trucks were thrown open and more than $175,000 worth of merchandise was unloaded. Included among the gifts were cowboy boots, 270 pairs of socks, bookcases, benches, gift cards for office supplies, clothing, sneakers, $6,000 worth of food, and washing machines.

Roker called Idaho Youth Ranch "one of the most unique charities" the "Today Show" has ever seen.

Robert Ball, senior vice president for programs, told Roker that the supplies would help meet the immediate needs of the ranch. "We can't do it without the support of others. So this response to our immediate needs helps us use our limited resources in other ways."

Hillside Family of Agencies in Rochester, N.Y., also recently found itself on the receiving end of a large charitable contribution. The organization benefited from ABC's "Oprah's Big Give" when, as part of that program, host Oprah Winfrey gave the local ABC affiliate $10,000 to donate to a community agency. That affiliate chose Hillside's Work-Scholarship Connection.

Hillside's Work-Scholarship Connection was established in 1987 to help at-risk urban youth students stay in school and achieve academic success.
