Founded by social casework pioneer Mary Richmond in 1920, the journal serves social workers and related professionals in direct practice, management, supervision, education, research, and policy and planning. FIS is one of only five journals that routinely comprise the “core of the social work journal network”. The journal is consistently rated highly with key audiences on overall quality and publishing productivity.

In 1999 the Alliance for Children and Families launched Faces of Change: Welfare Reform in America in collaboration with the Community Service Society of New York. The study collected over 200 first-hand accounts of current and former welfare recipients affected by welfare reform. The policy analysis that is set forth in Faces of Change: Welfare Policy Through the Lens of Personal Experience is based on our study of those stories. The full analysis includes chapters on employment, job training, child care, health care, transportation, and public benefits.

Strength in Adversity  [TOP] Purchase
This work presents the results of Family Service America's 1997 survey of American families, conducted through its member network.  By means of tables and extensive narrative interpretation the authors explore the results provided by nearly 10,000 individuals throughout the U.S. who participated in the survey.  The work gives special attention to the social assets of American consumers and offers new approaches to the analysis of social capital.  It also examines the accuracy of the knowledge social workers have about the clients they serve.

Aligning Education and Practice  [TOP] View Online
Full title: Aligning Education and Practice: Challenges and Opportunities in Social Work Education for Community-Centered Practice.
The Alliance for Children and Families has published this discussion paper to challenge social work educators and practitioners to work for their mutual benefit and to clarify what the profession of social work should be at this time in history. Specialization is to be expected. However, such diversity must be within the framework of an agreed-upon value and definitional base for social work. As a profession, social work needs to clarify its fundamental purpose and values if its role and function in society are to be properly understood and appreciated.

The Financial Reporting Practices of Nonprofits by Patrice Heinz
How will your agency be affected? A Surdna Foundation-funded study by the Alliance suggests legislation inspired by recent corporate accounting scandals will also impact nonprofits, both in terms of voluntarily adopting the accounting and audit provisions of the legislation, and in board accountability. Other issues include the added cost of complying with the legislation, and attendant difficulties in recruiting new board members.

The focus of the report alternates: even years (04, 06, etc.) examine management positions and odd years (05, 07, etc.) examine professional and program staff. Organizational and benefit information (health and insurance plans, retirement plans, and paid leave) are detailed in the report every year. Even-year reports include a special section detailing CEO benefits. Each report provides a breakdown of employee position salaries by budget size, education, staffing levels, and region. In addition to providing descriptive information for the survey year, survey-to-survey trends are identified in the report. Nearly 300 organizations participate in the yearly survey.
