Representatives from several Alliance for Children and Families member organizations selected the nearly 40 performance topics that are compared and analyzed as part of the Alliance National Benchmarking Initiative.
Decisions made by this group, the Alliance Benchmarking Advisory Committee, were guided by input from an online national interest survey.
Benchmark comparison topics are broken down into eight key areas:

- Length of stay (by program type)
- Occupancy
- Discharge status
- Use of restraint (usage rate and number of injuries by program type)
- Medication errors (by program type)
- Violence and aggression injuries (for both males and females)
- Violence and aggression property damage (for both males and females)
- Self-harm (for both males and females)
- Client satisfaction (among both adults and youth)
Foster Care & Therapeutic Foster Care
- Placement stability (by program type)
- Length of stay (by program type)

- Discharge status (by program type)
- Timeliness of reunification (by program type)

Economic Advancement
- Cost per client served
