About the Executive Leadership Institute

Instructional Methodology
The Executive Leadership Institute program focuses on best practices in the field of human services management and leadership. Content is delivered over 100 hours in two concentrated sessions of 41/2 days each over two years. The course of study includes pre-institute reading, formal presentations, interactive sessions, a practicum, and individual mentoring. A project, completed between the first and second years, ends with an oral presentation before the assembly of participants and faculty. Faculty of the School of Social Work and Ross Business School serve as mentors for the projects.

Benefits to the Organization/Agency
Individuals completing the institute develop heightened managerial and leadership skills, ensuring their organization’s capacity to meet future growth needs of their clients and community. The institute also provides the foundation for a future succession plan, as well as a visible career path for key employees. Finally, the organization will benefit from the natural networking that takes place among ELI participants as well as the establishment of professional relationships between participants and the nationally renowned ELI presenters and University of Michigan faculty who serve as mentors.

Continuing Education Credits
The University of Michigan awards CEU credits for ELI sessions (3.2 credits per year of participation) for a small fee paid to the university. Participants completing both sessions also receive a certificate in nonprofit management.

Financial Investment
Your organization’s investment for the 2009 session is only $3,300* (comparable programs typically cost $2,500 – $5,000 more) for members of the Alliance for Children and Families. The nonmember fee is $4,300. This fee includes program costs, all materials, and room and board. Transportation is not included. All applications must be submitted before April 3, 2009. A deposit of $1,000 must accompany the application.

Cancellation Policy
All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via email to , director of consultation and leadership services, or by fax at 414-359-1074. Written cancellation notices received prior to March 27, 2009, are eligible for refunded fees minus a $500 administrative charge.

Application Process
Enrollment is limited to 35 executives and senior-level managers with substantial policy and program responsibility. Preference is given to applicants from member organizations of the Alliance for Children and Families.

Prospective participants should complete the online application.

Only new participants must also write a 250-word essay to accompany the application, as directed on the application page, on the topic of what you believe it takes to prepare nonprofit leaders today to lead for a lifetime. In addition, applicants must include two professional references that address why the applicant would benefit from attending ELI.

Location
ELI participants are housed at the Bell Tower Hotel, recipient of Ann Arbor’s coveted Award for Outstanding Historic Preservation, combining old world elegance with gracious service. The Bell Tower is conveniently located within the University of Michigan campus and downtown Ann Arbor.

Travel
Participants planning to fly to Ann Arbor should make their arrangements via Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The trip from the airport to the hotel is approximately 30 minutes; taxicabs and rental cars are readily available at the airport.

Dress
Participants can dress in business casual attire. A fairly significant amount of walking is required so please dress and plan accordingly.

Executive Leadership Institute Alumni Connections Group
Graduates of ELI are invited to join ELI Alumni Connections, the ELI alumni organization.
