initiative helped Alliance member Personal & Family Counseling Services
of Tuscarawas Valley (PFCS)
in New Philadelphia, Ohio, secure additional funding for aging services.
The agency is a mentee in the New Age of Aging’s mentoring initiative,
and will use the new funds to extend case management outreach services

Home, passed away Nov. 27. Walker started the agency with her
husband Aubrey. Read the

Center’s Innovative Strategies Highlighted

Children’s Center in Yonkers, N.Y., is profiled in a new
Featured Listening Post section of the Johns Hopkins Center for
Civil Society’s

Post Project website. Andrus Children’s Center is one of the more
than 43 Alliance members that participate in the Listening Post Project.
The agency is featured because of its innovative web-based curriculum

Name Change Promotes
Community Connection
In
order to help the public better understand and connect to the agency's
core mission, Alliance member The Counseling Center of Milwaukee (TCCM)
has changed its name to
Pathfinders.
The name change came about after TCCM staff surveyed the community and
discovered that Pathfinders—its oldest and most well-known program—is
greatly recognized throughout Milwaukee, carrying emotional attachment
for many community members. Read the

Hillside Children’s
Center Receives Excellence Award
Adoption
Resource Network at Hillside Children’s Center, a branch of Alliance
member Hillside
Family of Agencies in Rochester, N.Y., was awarded the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Service’s 2008
Adoption Excellence Award. The honor recognizes the organization’s
extraordinary contributions in providing adoption and other permanency
outcomes for children in foster care through its Adoption Support and
Preservation (ASAP) services. ASAP offers support services to TANF-eligible
families who have adopted or are in the process of adopting a child.

Seedco Releases Project Reach Out Guide
Seedco,
an Alliance member in New York, saw the culmination of a national
initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Labor when the agency
released a publication at a Department of Labor conference this past
summer. The Project Reach Out Guide provides direction on building
effective partnerships between public workforce systems and community

Everyday Heroes: Stuart
and Elaine Duncan
Weekends are the loneliest time for teen-aged girls removed from
their homes because of parental abuse or neglect, or for pregnant girls
in the care of a human service organization. For many years, Stuart and
Elaine Duncan welcomed many of these troubled youth into their home as
part of the Family Resource Volunteer program at what is now named the
Partnership for Families, Children and Adults, an Alliance member in
Chattanooga, Tenn. Their commitment to the organization, which dates
back to the late 1980s, has included direct service, board and committee
service, and much more.

Volunteers of America
Receives Project Grant
Volunteers
of America-Minnesota, an Alliance member in Minneapolis, has been
awarded a grant for its Unbefriended Elders: Matching Values with
Decisions project. This project supports the rights of older adults who
have no identified family, close friends, or other support systems. If
incapacitated or experiencing a medical crisis, these individuals often
are at risk of over- or under-treatment when admitted to medical or care
settings. The agency will help these older adults establish health care
directives stating surrogacy, medical treatment, and care preferences.

Family Centers and
HealthCare Connection Merger
Alliance
member Family
Centers in Greenwich, Conn., has merged with HealthCare Connection
of Stamford, Conn. The addition of HealthCare Connections’ school-based
medical and counseling services, HIV/AIDS case management, and outreach
services for family day care providers will strengthen Family Centers’
health-related services.

Berea Receives Grant for
Holistic Health
Alliance
member Berea Children’s Home and Family Services (BCHFS)
in Berea, Ohio, has received a gift of $25,000 from the Community West
Foundation. The funds will be used for the formation of a Mental Health
Spirituality program to serve clients who use BCHFS’ residential
treatment center and group homes. BCHFS leadership hopes the program
will positively improve the holistic care of some of the most vulnerable
children living on the west side of the greater Cleveland area.

Alliance members have collectively tapped more than $1.1 million in
federal funds for their local
Ways to Work
low-interest car loan programs. The awards are from the Job Access
Reverse Commute (JARC) Program, which provides funding for innovative
transportation services that connect welfare recipients and other
low-income persons to jobs and employment-related services.

Youth Haven Expands
Children’s Behavioral Health
Youth
Haven, an Alliance member in Naples, Fla., has expanded its
children’s behavioral health program by adding Janette’s Cottage. The
new 12-bed facility provides a variety of out-of-home mental therapy
services for children through age 12 whose personal, social, emotional,
or family situations prohibit them from resolving their psychological
issues at home. The opening of Janette’s Cottage expands the number of
children living on the Youth Haven campus to 32 at any given time.

Merger Expands Member

Alliance member
Family & Children First in Louisville, Ky., has announced that it
will soon merge with
Family Place,
a fellow nonprofit organization in Louisville. The new organization will
provide expanded services for families and children affected by
violence, abuse, and neglect in Jefferson County, Ky., as well as
surrounding counties in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

February 1, 2008, the
Family &
Workplace Connection, a nonprofit resource and referral
organization, became part of Alliance member
Children & Families
First in Wilmington, Del. The merger offers clients a broader range
of services with over 35 programs that strive to increase child care
quality and availability, promote positive parenting, improve the
workplace, help teens make responsible decisions, and more. The merge
also presents the opportunity for future growth statewide by building on
a shared vision and shared areas of expertise.
