New Severson Center Favorite Resource: The National Marriage Project

The Alliance for Children and Families' Severson Center recently named the National Marriage Project (NMP) as its newest favorite resource.
NMP is a nonpartisan, interdisciplinary initiative housed at the University of Virginia. The project researches and analyzes the health of marriage in the United States, as well as the current, cultural forces that are shaping it. It also identifies strategies for increasing the quality of marital life and promoting its stability.
NMP is currently engaged in three major research projects.
- The State of Our Unions. The NMP’s annual report, The State of Our Unions, provides statistics on marriage, divorce, cohabitation, parenthood, and other relevant family trends in the U.S. It also features new research on important and timely topics related to marriage.
- Religion and Marriage among African Americans and Latinos. This project explores the ways in which religious attendance, religious tradition, and religious belief shape the quality and stability of marriage and family life among the nation’s two largest minority groups.
- The Foundations of Marital Quality and Stability. This project investigates whether a "soulmate" or an "institutional" model of marriage is more likely to foster higher levels of marital happiness and marital stability among young adults, ages 18-45.
