The Alliance for Children and Families, with Alliance and UNCA member Family and Children's Service, held its first Civic Engagement Training Institute, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Twenty participants from around the country and the Twin Cities convened for a two-and-a-half-day training experience to learn new civic engagement strategies, visit with constituent-led community action groups, and network with colleagues committed to expanding civic engagement.

The Institute is designed to:

  • provide training and learning opportunities in civic engagement for nonprofit human service agency staff;

  • identify specific skills required to increase staff involvement and success in civic engagement activities, especially with populations that have less access to decision makers; and

  • explore pathways to develop organizational capacity to carry out civic engagement activities.

Participants returned from the Institute "energized" and "ready to get back to work" supporting the civic engagement activities of their organizations and communities.

Based on its first year success, we hope to repeat the Institute for a larger audience next year.
