Infants at High Risk for Serious Abuse

According to a recent study in the journal Pediatrics, infants, and especially infants on Medicaid, are at high risk for serious injuries caused by abuse. Neither the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), nor the National Incidence Study (NIS), the two data sets most relied upon in the child welfare field, can identify cases in which children sustained injuries so severe as to require hospitalization. This study, using the 2006 Kids’ Inpatient Data System (KID), is the first to examine injuries that required a hospital stay. … more

Foster Youth Caucus Listening Tour Kick-Off Engages Alliance Members

Yesterday on Capitol Hill, the Foster Youth Caucus held a day of events to kick off a nationwide listening tour that began with a stop in Los Angeles and will proceed to four other locations around the country. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), in her leadership role as chair of the Caucus, initiated the listening tour in order to engage community stakeholders in a national conversation about best practices and current issues in child welfare. “The most innovative practices happen in communities,” she said. … more

Supporting the Homeless Children and Youth Act

The Homeless Children and Youth Act, HR 32, would make it easier for children, youth, and their families to gain access to homeless services. The U.S. House Financial Services Committee’s Insurance, Housing, and Community Opportunity Subcommittee passed HR 32, the Homeless Children and Youth Act, by a voice vote. The bill will next be considered by the full Financial Services Committee.

The Act would extend the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) definition of homelessnessness by including those verified as homeless under four other programs: … more
