Explores the lives of four adult siblings with developmental disabilities who reside both inside and outside “the system.” Documents the tradeoffs between personal autonomy, choice, privacy, safety, health, and social support in their lives.
Reviews literature, ethical issues, and the issue of voice as they relate to the living situations of older adults with developmental disabilities. Integrates a study of such individuals who reside in Milwaukee County, Wis. Includes an extensive appendix documenting the author’s field visits.
