Part of the Scanning the Horizons: A Focus on Aging Trends collection, this chart depict how the number of adults 65 and older will increase considerably, from 12 percent of the total population in 2000 to 20 percent in 2050. The number of “older old,” defined as adults 85 years or older, will increase from 4.3 million adults (1.5 percent of the population) in 2000 to 19 million adults (4.3 percent of the population) in 2050.
