Favorite Websites of the Severson Center
The following websites are go-to references for librarians in the Alliance for Children and Families' Severson Center. These resources often are used by Alliance librarians responding to members' information requests.
The Severson Center makes this list of resources available to Alliance members and the public in order to assist the nonprofit human services industry with a variety of information needs related to daily and strategic operation.
- U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA). Provides updates about federal AoA initiatives and serves as a gateway for information about aging issues. The AoA seeks to educate older adults and their caregivers about the benefits and services available to them.
- Child Welfare Information Gateway (CWIG). A service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, CWIG provides access to print and electronic publications, websites, databases, and online learning tools. Resources are intended to improve child welfare practices, and many are appropriate for sharing with families.
- Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). A component of the U.S. Department of Justice, the OJJDP collaborates with professionals from diverse disciplines to improve juvenile justice policies and practices.
- Kaiser Family Foundation's State Health Facts. Provides free, up-to-date, and easy-to-use health data for all 50 states. Data addresses more than 700 health topics, including eligibility and coverage details for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program.
- Kids Count Data Center and Kids Count Data Book. This major initiative of The Annie E. Casey Foundation offers access to hundreds of measures of child well-being. Includes national-, state-, and local-level data.
- Listening Post Project. A project of the Center for Civil Society Studies at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies, this effort reports on how nonprofits are responding to a variety of timely challenges. Several national, nonprofit, intermediary organizations also contribute their experience and expertise about how current events are impacting nonprofits.
- Nonprofit Risk Management Center. Provides assistance and resources for community-serving organizations. The Center's resources help nonprofits cope with uncertainty and respond to challenges. Advice includes practical, affordable solutions for controlling risks that threaten a nonprofit's ability to achieve its mission.
- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). A component of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, SAMHSA provides grant news, data, curricula, and other resources related to its eight strategic initiatives: prevention of substance abuse and mental illness, trauma and justice, military families, recovery support, health care reform, health information technology, data outcomes and quality, and public awareness and support.
- U.S. Census Fact Finder. A source for population, housing, economic, and geographic data.
- National Resource Directory. Connects wounded service members, active service members, veterans, and service members' families to support services.
