The Alliance for Strong Families and Communities seeks proposals for presentations at the 2019 Alliance National Conference, held Oct. 16-18 in Indianapolis. This event is for cross-sector human services leaders who are eager to learn, collaborate, and co-create solutions that advance innovative practice, policy, and research that make progress toward achieving a healthy and equitable society.

The 2018 Alliance National Conference will showcase practice, policy, and research that advances the human services sector's knowledge and action in the following impact areas where we seek to make meaningful contributions:

  • Thriving and Vibrant Nonprofit Sector
  • Health and Well-Being
  • Educational Success
  • Economic Opportunity
  • Safety and Security

Along with established and validated knowledge, we also welcome new and innovative thinking that disrupts conventional wisdom about how to address the most persistent challenges and barriers to change, effective practice, and leadership.

We want to be informed by diverse thinking; therefore, we welcome leaders from diverse sectors, disciplines, and perspectives to uncover the most effective pathways to help children, adults, families, and communities realize their full potential. This includes expertise from public and private sectors and technology, philanthropy, academia/research, and business sectors.  

Proposal Selection Process and Deadlines

All workshop proposals must be submitted online by Dec. 12, 2018. All required information must be included for proposal consideration. Submitting a proposal does not guarantee acceptance. Individuals will be notified March 12, 2019 if their presentations have been selected for inclusion in the conference.s

The Alliance will not permit any presenter to use his or her presentation to make a sales pitch for any specific firm, publication, or service. Presenters are not paid for their participation but will receive a $75 registration discount off the full conference registration rate. 

Conference Tracks

We seek proposals that address these topics:

  • Thriving and Vibrant Nonprofit Sector: Advancing practices and policies that ensure a well-resourced and sustainable nonprofit sector that invests in outcomes measurement, innovation and growth, and generative partnerships.
  • Health and Well-Being: Advancing an integrated, holistic, prevention-first health model that responds to the social determinants of health and achieves improved outcomes, particularly for populations experiencing disparities.
  • Educational Success: Advancing a continuum of educational supports from cradle-to-career to prepare children and youth to succeed in the 21st century.
  • Economic Opportunity: Advancing policies, programs, models, and systems that advance living wages and pathways to financial well-being that support economic mobility and reduce poverty.
  • Safety and Security: Advancing systems work together to ensure that children, adults, and families thrive and are safe from abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation.

Content Focus Areas

In addition to aligning with one of the conference tracks, proposals should address one of the following content focus areas:

Presentation Formats

We’re committed to delivering an experience with that promotes engagement, activates new relationships, and sparks innovation. Presenters are asked to consider which of the following formats allows for the best delivery of content and maximizes participation. All selected presenters will be invited to orientations to review the format expectations and position you for success.

  • Speed Reading: Book club converges with speed dating in this interactive format. Share a must-read book with conference participants. How It Works: Each Speed Reading session will feature three 20-minute rounds during which presenters will give overviews of their featured books to small groups of up to eight attendees and lead them in discussions about the book and its impact on their work.
  • Pecha Kucha: Put down your presentation clicker. For Pecha Kucha 20x20, you won’t need one because your slides are set up to automatically advance every 20 seconds. Just be ready to talk—share a great idea, something unexpected you have learned, or anything that sparks your imagination. This rapid presentation style is designed to spark conversations. How It Works: Five to seven presenters with 20-slide presentations that advance every 20 seconds will be grouped together. The 60- or 90-minute sessions will feature the short presentations and group discussion. Present on a theme identified in the Requested Topics section of this call for presentations or choose something entirely different—as long as you are passionate about it.   • Project-Based: Don’t just tell attendees about your expertise—choose this format and help them translate your advice into action. For Project-Based sessions, enrich an overview of your topic with hands-on practice and coaching for attendees. How It Works: Presenters will introduce their topics in less than 30 minutes and then engage attendees in hands-on applications of the topics. Session participants should have the opportunity to develop prototypes or examples. Presenters will also lead attendees in a discussion at the end of the session about what they’ve learned.
  • Design It Yourself: Suggest a workshop format of your choosing. Consider a panel discussion, world café, or other style. How It Works: It’s up to you—just remember, adults have a hard time retaining information from 90-minute lectures, so keep your delivery as participatory and engaging as possible.

Submission Requirements

Address all the following submission requirements in your presentation proposal. All workshop proposals must be submitted by Dec. 12 through the Alliance’s online submission form .

  • Contact Information: Include full contact information including name, title, organization, address, phone, and email address for the lead presenter (or main contact person) and any co-presenters. If presenters or their organizations use Twitter, list their usernames for increased connection with participants and conference promotions.
  • Biography: Include a current biography for each presenter that is no longer than 200 words.
  • Track: Select the requested topic that best matches your proposal.
  • Content Focus Area: Select the focus area related to your proposal.
  • Format: Select the format of your presentation.
  • Presentation Methods: If you are proposing a “Design Your Own” format, describe the format/delivery methods you will use to engage the audience. Preference will be given to those formats that offer strong participant engagement opportunities.
  • Presentation Title: Include a brief, descriptive title for your presentation.
  • Learning Objectives: List two to three learning objectives describing what attendees will learn from your presentation.
  • Description: Describe your presentation in 350 words or less. Include an explanation of how your topic is practical and relevant for the attendees of this conference.
  • Content Level: As excellent presentations are designed with the participant level in mind, indicate whether your content level is “Learner” or “Doer.” “Learner” sessions are for those who have limited experience with the subject matter and seek to be introduced to the topic. “Doer” presentations are for audiences with prior experience in the subject area who are looking to advance their skill and mastery.
  • Prior Presentations: If this workshop has been presented before, list the conference(s) and date(s).
