This exclusive series of speakers is designed to foster better collaboration and develop a future-systems focus among boards and chief executives, all through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens. CEOs and executive directors are strongly encouraged to invite their board members. Participants will begin by learning strategies for mitigating organizational risk through scenario planning and safeguarding their organization’s capacity to support its mission during the pandemic and beyond. 

The learning series will then cover systems and future-focused visioning by introducing the concept of generative board governance, which requires boards to become “sense makers” through greater upstream, generative thinking. Then, consider another topic of the utmost importance—equity, diversity, and inclusion. To achieve their missions and long-term impact, organizations must chart and advance their equity journey, which includes centering and embedding of equity within the board governance structure. Finally, in an exclusive, in-depth, and interactive session, Bob Johansen, noted futurist from Silicon Valley, will share how leaders can break out of categorical thinking and move toward full spectrum thinking to see greater possibilities in our rapidly evolving world. 

Throughout this learning series, participants will have the opportunity to work together, as boards and CEOs, and develop strong networking relationships as colleagues tackling the same challenges. At the conclusion, your organization will have actionable solutions and next steps to move forward in the current climate and you will be equipped to lean into and embrace the future.

Using What We Know to Build a Better Child and Family Well-Being System for the Future

Child welfare is at a moment of reckoning. Reckoning with its history of systemic racism, over-reporting of people living in poverty to child protection systems, and its structural design that too often removes children from their families. Many are calling to transform our current system, and community-based organizations are actively involved in that transformation as they move their focus upstream in response to the Family First Prevention Services Act, which incentivizes organizations, for the first time, to keep kids out of foster care. 

At the same time—amid the COVID-19 pandemic—there is a national narrative being driven by mainstream media coverage that children are unsafe in their homes because calls to child protection systems are down. However, focusing on the role of mandatory reporters as the solution to child abuse falls short. Many of the cases being reported during the pandemic are low risk, and only 15% of reports by mandatory reporters are substantiated by child welfare agencies. The overwhelming majority of cases that come to the attention of child welfare are due to neglect, and often due to poverty. Moreover, mandatory reporting can be clouded by racial and socioeconomic bias. We must be vigilant against bias and structural racism leading to family separation. We must change the national narrative to one that is focused on solutions, offers hope, and promotes the strengths and assets of families.

We need to reimagine the child welfare system to build a better child and family well-being system. Through this learning series, participants will gain insight into:

  • Lessons learned from previous disasters and how we might apply them to COVID-19 response and recovery efforts
  • Building an equitable and just child welfare system
  • Applying brain science research, including resilience, into our systems
  • What creating a 21st-century child and family well-being system entails

Incorporating Youth Voice with the Greater Hartford Youth Leadership Academy
Youth from the Greater Hartford Youth Leadership Academy, a program of Hartford Communities That Care, will participate in each of this course’s four sessions. After each, they will share their thoughts and opinions on the topic in an on-demand video for course participants to review.

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified disparities in education, and community-based organizations are uniquely positioned to address those disparities. In this four-session learning series, learn how community-based organizations and schools are achieving shared goals for student success by strengthening their relationships, leveraging their unique expertise, and developing innovative approaches within the education system in their communities. 

A key takeaway is that there is no cookie-cutter recipe. Reducing Health Care Disparities within the Social Determinants of Health Framework

The COVID-19 pandemic is highlighting the inequities of our current health care systems. People of color and lower socioeconomic status face more barriers to access care for themselves and others. This three-speaker series starts with a deep dive into the political determinants of health to understand the root causes of these inequities. 

Then uncover strategies for increasing health equity. Learn about Appreciative Inquiry, an approach that helps to reduce inequities by engaging people in designing systems around their goals and aspirations. Another way to approach inequities in care access is for community-based organizations to partner with health care providers. Explore creating win-win partnerships that leverage community-based organizations’ strengths and health care organizations’ strengths to create better outcomes for communities. Participants will also learn to analyze their work within the social determinants of health framework to develop an action plan to get started.
